Our Premier Record of 2025: Rosalía's Lux Claims the Number One Spot.

Initially, this album might appear more like a challenging university quiz rather than the latest popular music record by a musician whose previous hit featured a global K-pop star. Broken across 4 separate parts and performed in thirteen languages, we have a dizzying orchestral-influenced work investigating female mystique, spiritual transcendence, and corporal change, frequently via the perspective of different saintly figures. The dissolution of a romance—a theme treated with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—soars skyward here, buoyed by the lush sound of a major orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning composer among a long roll call of collaborators. The pure audacity alone makes the efforts of contemporary artists look rather laughable.

Transcending Academic Pretense

That Lux manages to avoid overly academic posturing is nothing short of a miracle, and sole credit going to the artist. Although this is not her first project to alchemize historical sounds and modern styles, the ambitions are much greater here, and the balancing act more precarious. The element that really raises this fourth release, beyond its complex melodies, rich arrangements, and inherent theatricality, is an essential sense of fun. Similar to the iconic Björk during her peak, there is a wondrous quality to the vocalist's singing which sweeps you into its whirlwind. Even when she's tearing your heart in two, you nevertheless desire to stay alongside her through the journey.

A Signature Example of Joy

That exuberant energy shines clearly during a stunning Italian ballad inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a string-drenched whirlpool for more than four minutes. Then, everything drops silent, to reveal we hear a spontaneous laugh followed by a declaration before a hilariously over-the-top string surge crashes in with cartoonish force. The song immediately shifts to the wild track driven by racing orchestration, an imposing choir, and a cameo appearance from the artist Björk.

"The charm with Lux lies in the listener rarely exactly understand—or even want to know—what you will go next."

Almost each song concludes in a completely distinct place from where it began. One moment explores the fleeting trappings of fame over a delicate symphony before disintegrating in electronic chaos. Elsewhere, a cut that recalls her previous trap-infused style starts out dark and sinister, featuring prowling beats, before fluttering traditional rhythms and an angelic chorus arrive to soften its jagged edges.

The Balance Of Experiment and Accessibility

A key balancing act of Lux involves straddling the line between bold experimentation and broad accessibility. This is little coincidence that the album has achieved her highest-charting release to break into the Top 5 of key markets: at its core a collection of utterly catchy hits. One track sung primarily in English swells around a refrain that feels to gather increasingly nagging hooks as it spirals skyward. This trick is echoed by a different expansive track that grows and contracts, intertwining layered melodies as an intricate weave.

  • A dance-infused song charms via its playful, theatrical flair and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns the cultural impact of other heartbreak songs, lambasting an ex- lover labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Across the album, the vocals have a sharp edge, akin to a fairy-tale character hiding a knife: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

This album represents popular music on a grand scale, an ambitious reach for capital-A Art in an era of impending artificial blankness. It eschews self-absorption for sublime transcendence, creating an over-the-top drama that skillfully manages its built-in ridiculousness. This is a deep well of hidden gems that takes patience to completely explore but doesn't seem like hard work. While some major pop albums of 2025 felt like a meager scraps, this record offers a lavish banquet where the characters around the table, some tipsy on holy drink, flutter between discussions about historical saints, the profound sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and common stories about hopeless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary musical from music's most endlessly inventive visionary.
